Functional Safety Integrity and Its Contribution to Asset Integrity

Dr Li’s presentation will show how Asset integrity is a key element related to oil and gas processes to ensure facilities deliver their output effectively and safely through good design, construction and operating practices by controlling the major incidents throughout the lifecycle.

Most of the major incidents or hazards are a result of multiple safety barriers failures, and Functional Safety has been recognised as an important practice to prevent the occurrence of major incidents and mitigate the associated consequences by introducing active safety barriers into the process and operation.

The presentation will focus on the following topics:

  • The establishment of Safety Integrity Levels for Safety Instrumented Functions via safety studies during the design stage
  • The monitoring and validation of the required safety integrity levels via maintenance and proof testing activities during the operation
  • The use of “bow-tie” model as an example to demonstrate how functional safety or safety integrity fits into the boarder Asset Integrity management system
